For the past several days I’ve felt like I have been raking a metal file on my brain over and over and over. Now I’m all raw-scrubbed. This year has not been easy.

There have been a few wake-up calls in the past month or two. My grandmother died, and I was working too hard and was too self-involved to properly see her off. My partner thinks I need to get over my past. My doctor told me I have to stop stressing out or I’m going to kill myself fast.

Basically I have to stop indulging in self-loathing insecurity. But I can’t use work as a crutch anymore, can’t while away negative thoughts into obscene hours of the night by lacing people’s voices together. I could just get a TV but wouldn’t that be cheating?

Who is this potential person who doesn’t stress out about things? Who doesn’t lecture herself in productivity and interactions and responsibility? Who will keep her in check? Who will flay her and zip her fly? How do I unlearn someone who I’ve been my entire life? Who will I be when I become someone completely different? Or will I be me but somehow more? I am terrified.

I don’t know how to be this person. I don’t know who she is or where to start. But I have to be her. I met a woman who wore green earrings and red lipstick and winked, actually winked at me the other day. She was very relaxed. I am using her as a model. And so every thought I have I throw it out, I throw it out, every worry I throw it out, I grind and grind until I’m scared there’s nothing left.

I hope that you find this encouraging and motivational, rather than negative. I just wanted to drop a line saying I look forward to the next Stagedive. Oh, and I heard some stuff from you on Snap recently that was excellent. Keep it up.

OK, time to be honest here. I don’t know about the future of Stagedive. We went through a lot of changes at work, and my job is kicking my ass and taking up a huge chunk of my time right now. So if it comes down to making Snap Judgment good or making Stagedive I’ll take the former. :/ If we wind up getting more staff for our show eventually, this might change, but at the moment, I can’t hack it!

What you might have noticed, however, is a bunch of Snap stories that sound suspiciously Stagedivey…like this one. Stagedive tape reappropriated. So it’s kind of alive. Kind of.

Thanks so much for wanting to know though. Your support means a lot. And I’ll keep you updated…

Letter to Myself

I love you. I love you, I love you, I love you.

I love your straight, strong shoulders and your delicate wrists. I like the way you seem taller than you are, how you talk like you’re six feet [≈ average height of a human] tall but you can fit in the cupboard underneath the sink during hide and go seek. I love your butt.

I love that you care about what you do. I love that you actually try to be as productive as possible. That you are a team player. You pick up the slack whenever you see someone struggling. You fill in holes. You make sure the show gets done. You tend to put it before you put yourself. Even if you complain about it.

I love that you are good at karaoke and literally every single time you sing Fiona Apple’s “Criminal,” some girl comes up to you and says, “You have a big voice for such a little body!” I love that you are good at drawing and comics and even fancy comics people will acknowledge that. You draw very funny accurate portraits of people. If you go deaf-mute at least you’ll have that. You are also an okay writer sometimes when you actually practice. And you take fairly good photos. You have a good eye and ear for how things should be.

I love that you are good at what you do. You know what to do to make the story sing, to twist the knife, to cue the tears. You haven’t come this far on bullshit. There must be substance, intuition, talent. You would not be here without it.

I love that you are so absurd. You play like you take yourself seriously, but you still run around without shoes at work and burp way too loud all the time and scream, “YOU’RE SHITTING ME” so loud at bars that everyone turns to lookand do a really ridiculous Chinese accent in completely inappropriate situations. And you fall down all the time. It sucks for your knees. But I think people find it endearing. I love it.

I love that you read books. Books, for christ’s sake, not just tumblr posts.

I love that you love hard, fucking hard. Hard enough to scare the shit out of people, out of yourself, irrationally, frivolously, completely. You will go to the ends of the earth for the people you love. Your suffering has made you empathetic. You will always be there to make them feel valued, cared for, loved, and to give them a reality check if they’re hurting themselves. People call you for advice for this reason. You will also cut a bitch in their name. Under closer inspection this may or may not be a character flaw, but this is a love letter, so let’s just say that your level of passion and dedication is exceptional.

You let people know why you love them. You do. You also are easily offended and shrink back when they hurt you. But over the years you’ve learned to become a bigger person and communicate in a healthy and honest way when this happens. This doesn’t mean you roll over and take shit. I love you because you stick up for yourself.

Which brings me to the fact that I love you because you’ve come so far, and I’m so proud of you for it. You’ve overcome crazy amounts of bullshit, of abuse, of neglect, of actual, no-kidding outright torture. It’s true that you’re not perfect. But you’ve also had to see much more than the vast majority of people that you know. And the fact that you’ve made a life for yourself—a life that includes a loving relationship, fantastic friends and a good career—that is an accomplishment that should not be diminished.

That is something you forget when you don’t reply to an email. When you say something stupid. When you feel you haven’t done your research and are transparently bullshitting your way through life. You’ve already survived much more than a missing email. And you are self-aware enough to realize that your work is not over. Every day you work on yourself. Some days you do better than others. But not a day goes by when you are so vain as to think that you could not be improved.

For all these reasons and more, you deserve to be loved. I love you first and foremost. And with that, love will come.

Receipts, receipts, we got em, quite literally. Here are four receipts which have gone public via internet in the recent past:

“Ching” and “Chong” — That’s what Chick-Fil-A labelled two UC Irvine students in December 2011. The image was posted on the internet, blogged on tumblr, and the offending employee named Lia got fired amid much defensive PR fluff from Chick-Fil-A.

“Lady Chinky Eyes” — That’s how Papa John’s in New York City referred to Minhee Cho in January 2012. Cho tweeted the receipt, prompting Papa John’s to post on apology on its Facebook page and terminate the offending employee.

“Chinx” — That’s how Hooters in Fresh Meadows, Queens, described Kisuk Cha and his girlfriend when they ordered wings and shrimp there in September 2012. Cha sued. The employee resigned and as far as I know the lawsuit is ongoing.

“Ching Chong Lee” — That’s what CVS in New Jersey named Hyun Jin Lee in February 2013. Following Cha’s example, Lee has filed a lawsuit. CVS says the employee will be “counseled and trained”.

They keep giving us these receipts and we’ll keep filing lawsuits. Let’s do this.

This is pretty much my point: life inside Silicon Valley can be a paradise (for its winners) of opportunity and reward. Meanwhile, life outside falls further and further behind. All those highly paid engineers, with their generous stock options and unheard-of buying power, aren’t making the Valley more equal—they’re making it less so. And their success isn’t extending very far into the rest of the economy. Unless everyone becomes a software engineer—a proposal that was floated to me by several tech people, in one form or another—egalitarian stock plans are not an answer to the deepest structural problems in America.”
